Digital Bichromatic Ferrography Microscope

Ferrography has advanced as one of the premier predictive maintenance and analytical tools. This technique for wear particle analysis has become prominent in the paper industry, industrial plants with automated operations and in healthcare - specifically related to artificial joints and limbs. Ferrography enables plant managers, maintenance managers and healthcare professionals to make critical decisions more effectively.

The ferrogram is a specially designed and prepared microscope slide that is examined under a polarized bichromatic microscope equipped with a camera. Red, green and polarizing filters are used to distinguish the size, shape, composition and surface conditions of ferrous, nonferrous and non-metallic particles. The particles are further studied and classified in order to determine the type of wear and the source of the particle. Ferrography is capable of detecting active machine wear and can often provide a root cause based on the morphology of the wear particles. 

  • Objective Lenses: Objectives are mounted in reversed quintuple nosepiece. DIN Infinity Corrected Optical System (ICOS) Plan Achromat Metallurgical objectives include:
    • LWD 5x, WD = 10.8mm, NA 0.15
    • LWD 10x, WD = 12.2mm, NA 0.30
    • LWD 20x, WD = 4mm, NA 0.45
    • LWD 50x, WD = 7.9mm, NA 0.55
  • Viewing Head: 30° inclined gemel trinocular viewing head with interpupillary adjustment of 54mm - 75mm. Diopters +/-5 on each eyetube. Beam splitter provides light of 100:0 or 50:50. Ergonomic binocular / trinocular heads are available.
  • Eyepieces: High eyepoint widefield plan 10x eyepieces F.N. 22 are standard and accept a 26mm reticle. WF15x Eyepieces are available below.
  • Total Magnification: 50x, 100x, 200x and 500x.
  • Specimen Stage: Double layer mechanical 175mm x 145mm stage with coaxial adjustment movement range of 76mm (X) x 42mm (Y). Includes metal plate.
  • Illumination: Reflected illumination 5w LED Koehler illuminator with oblique light device, centerable adjustable field and aperture diaphragm. Transmitted light is 5W LED. Both LED lights are warm color. Voltage 100~240V. Includes 360° rotatable analyzer, and polarizer for reflected light. Polarizer is included for transmitted light.
  • Condenser: Includes NA 0.90 condenser with swing-out top lens. Center-adjustable aperture iris diaphragm.
  • Focusing: Transmitted and reflected frame has coaxial focus system with tension adjustment and rack stop. Coarse range 28mm, fine precision of 0.002mm. Maximum sample height is 28mm.
  • Ferrography Filters: Red filter for vertical illuminator and green glass filter for transmitted light.
  • Camera: Includes 5.1 megapixel digital camera, pixel size 2.0µm, sensor size 1/2.8", 20fps @2592 x 1944, 40fps @ 1296 x 972, with output for USB3. The software allows you to capture and save images as well as make measurements.Basic capture and measure functions are compatible for PC, MAC, or Linux.
  • Software Calibration: If you plan to make measurements using the software you will need to calibrate the microscope. Calibrating your software with the microscope requires use of a stage micrometer. When ordering please select this option if you do not already have a stage micrometer. The stage micrometer is 1mm / 100 divisions. If NIST certification is selected 10 points will be certified. Please note that NIST certification takes approximately 2 weeks.
